2024 Ford EcoSport Review: Performance, Comfort, Practicality, and Price

Just like how water takes away the rough sides of a stone, the Ford EcoSport has been improved in three different versions since it was first launched in the UK almost ten years ago. These changes are meant to maintain its relevance in the growing small SUV segment.

Design and Build Quality

The first impression one gets from the EcoSport model is its rather heavy look which typifies the image of an SUV, with the promise of a higher position when driving. The car is plastered on the brave extension of the Ford Fiesta accommodating two turbocharged 1.0-liter petroleum engines – 123bhp and 138bhp which are adequate to give shots to rivals like Hyundai Kona and Kia Stonic.

Nevertheless, the first-generation model of the EcoSport was called out for having an interior made of cheap materials and lacking technological advancements. The current model gets better in such areas but still suffers from age-related maulings, coupled with audible shakes and cherry-sour raw materials as opposed to the likes of Skoda Kamiq.

Performance and Driving Experience

The driving experience in the EcoSport range can be referred to as ambivalent. On the one hand the 124 bhp EcoBoost engine is quite capable and performs satisfactorily, on the other hand, it is let down by the lack of handling precision. The steering is rather imprecise and body roll is apparent when cornering. In cities, the ride can be harsh especially in the sporty ST-Line models where the suspension is much firmer.

The refinement is tolerable for this class of vehicles, but the engine noise level is higher than in the Fiesta and there are also the vibrations coming through the pedals. The clutch pedal is a bit heavy and may be awkward for novice drivers as it takes some getting used to.

Interior and Goodness of Life

In the interior, the EcoSport has a more modern looking setup over its previous generations. The instrument panel, similar to the Ford Fiesta latest model, has an 8.0-inch LCD, which is able to offer DAB radio. It also has USB ports and links with smartphones via Apple Car Play and Android Auto. However, even though it has been designed to be modern there are some disappointing aspects when it comes to the design compared with rivals like the Seat Arona.

The comfort of the seats is fair for the front seats, though there is limited space for the legs at the back, making it not ideal for tall people. There is the same issue with boot space, as it comes with a heavy door that swings sideways making it difficult to open at tight angles.

Practicality and other Elements

The new EcoSport offers a number of different grades, which include the very basics such as 17” wheels, in-built sat-nav and rear parking sensors entry-level Titanium. Higher grades usually have a sportier look with more features, but some customers may not like the lack of a diesel option.

Boot space is definitely smaller than other rivals, and although rear seats can be folded 60:40 split, they do not go completely flat existing a step in the luggage area. This could be a problem for the users who need the most storage space possible.

Cost of Ownership and Pricing Structure

The pricing strategy adopted for the EcoSport has been rising steadily over the years, and it has placed this model in rivalry with vehicles such as the VW T-Cross. The cheapest variant of the EcoSport, which is the 124bhp petrol version, has good fuel consumption figures but is likely to be less attractive on PCP finance when compared to the Ford Puma.

There is a three-year, 60,000- miles warranty, which is not as favorable as the one offered by some players in the market such as the Renault Captur and Kia Stonic, who offer longer coverage. On the other hand, there are certain aspects of the EcoSport’s reliability that require improvement because it managed to place 27 out of 32 manufacturers on the What Car? Reliability Survey 2022.

Safety and Security

The vehicle has embedded emergency braking system so even though it has not been rated by the Euro NCAP, the vehicle update standards have gone beyond that. Also, there is option for a Driver Assistance Pack which includes features such as blind spot monitoring for added safety.

Thatcham Security Research rated the EcoSport 4 stars for break-in protection, however, it did not score 5 stars for protection against theft.

Summary
In many ways, the 2024 Ford EcoSport has advanced in comfort and technology. However, these improvements are less apparent with regards to driving dynamics and practicality. It may attract buyers who prefer a compact SUV with an elevated seating position. However, buyers in this segment should look elsewhere as tougher competition can be found in the small SUV segment.
