Alpine has confirmed a major shift in its Formula 1 strategy, entering into a multi-year power unit and gearbox supply agreement with Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains. This new partnership will begin in 2026, marking a departure from Alpine’s original plan to develop its own power unit at Renault’s Viry-Châtillon engine facility.
Key Details of the Deal
The agreement will see Alpine receive Mercedes power units and gearboxes for the duration of the new F1 regulation era, starting in 2026 and lasting until at least 2030. This move streamlines the integration process for Alpine and is expected to optimize the performance of their cars in the highly competitive F1 environment.
“Alpine and Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains, and Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix have entered into power unit and gearbox agreements from the start of the 2026 FIA Formula 1 World Championship,” said Alpine in a brief statement.
Impact on Mercedes’ Engine Supply
The deal will not require Mercedes to expand its engine production capacity at its Brixworth facility. Instead, Alpine will take over the engine supply quota that was previously allocated to Aston Martin, who will switch to Honda power units starting in 2026.
This means Mercedes will continue supplying engines to its own works team, McLaren, and Williams alongside the new partnership with Alpine.
Alpine’s Focus on 2024 and 2025
While this new engine deal looks ahead to 2026, Alpine’s immediate focus remains on the 2024 and 2025 seasons. The team aims to deliver strong performances in the remaining years under the current engine and regulatory structure before the transition to Mercedes power.
This agreement with Mercedes marks a significant strategic shift for Alpine, aligning them with one of the most successful engine manufacturers in modern F1 history as they look to compete at the highest level in the new regulation era.
