Could Max Verstappen Make a Shocking Move to McLaren in 2026?

Max Verstappen’s future at Red Bull Racing is under growing speculation after a challenging start to the 2025 Formula 1 season. Now, fresh rumors suggest the four-time world champion could make a stunning switch to McLaren — and it might happen as early as 2026.

Following a disappointing Bahrain Grand Prix, where Verstappen could only manage sixth place, questions are being asked about Red Bull’s long-term competitiveness. Meanwhile, McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are locked in a fierce battle at the front, raising the possibility of internal tensions that could shake up the driver market.

F1 journalist Ewan Gale recently discussed the situation, highlighting that while Aston Martin remains a serious suitor for Verstappen, McLaren could emerge as a surprise option — especially if a fallout occurs between Norris and Piastri.

“Aston Martin will have a unique package next year, which will be tempting for Verstappen,” Gale said. “But if McLaren faces drama between their two stars, don’t rule out a blockbuster move involving Max.”

Zak Brown, McLaren’s CEO, is known for being aggressive when it comes to signing top talent. If the situation escalates within McLaren’s camp, they could be willing to open the door for Verstappen, offering a new project and a car capable of fighting for titles.

Red Bull Facing Pressure to Keep Verstappen

Brandon Sutton, another F1 analyst, pointed out that Red Bull’s current struggles could complicate their efforts to hold on to their star driver. With the team’s future power unit plans uncertain and reliability issues surfacing, Verstappen might start looking elsewhere for stability — and success.

“Verstappen has an incredible feel for the car, and right now even he seems lost,” Sutton explained. “If Red Bull can’t fix things quickly, Max might find the idea of working with Adrian Newey at Aston Martin — or even starting fresh with McLaren — too good to resist.”

While Aston Martin’s recent performances haven’t been stellar, the long-term project — especially with the legendary Newey rumored to be involved — could be a huge draw for Verstappen. However, McLaren’s impressive momentum and strong lineup offer another intriguing alternative.

In the unpredictable world of Formula 1, nothing is off the table. If tensions flare and opportunities arise, we could witness one of the biggest driver moves of the decade.
