Ferrari has finally pulled the wraps off the highly anticipated F80 and some of its official sources have described it as the most powerful road car the brand has ever made. The incredible hypercar incorporates a hybrid V6 engine with three electric motors, which generates a mind boggling power of 1200 horses.
A distinguishing feature of the F80 is the advanced “Boost Optimization” functionality. This system is capable of understanding the configuration of the circuit and controlling the hybrid power system delivery at particular times, in order for the driver to clock his or her best lap time, with no other intervention whatsoever. The driver has the option of two modes- “Performance” where a constant rate of electric propulsion is delivered for a long duration and “Qualify” where maximumoprecharge is achieved for instance when beginning a lap but uses up the power rather fast.
The powertrain of the F80 includes a rear V6 engine rated at 900 hp and augmented by the electric motors to reach a total power output of 1200 hp. In contrast to previous models such as SF90 Stradale and 296 GTB, the F80 does not offer a full-electric mode of propulsion, focusing more on the intended performance of the car.
In its area of expertise, Ferrari took its inspiration from the MGU-K motor in Formula 1 and made bespoke electric motors for the F80. The vehicle is a 4X4 vehicle with both front axle electric motors integrated on the front axle for torque vectoring and a built in inverter and cooling system to save space and weight.
Other aspects include a “digital twin” side slip control system and active aerodynamics for improving downforce, especially while turning.
Only 799 such F80s will be made for a price of slightly above $3 million each and it has already been allocated to existing clients, making it one of the most desirable models in the history of Ferrari.
