Multiple reports indicate that Jack Doohan’s tenure as a Formula 1 race driver may be cut short, with Alpine reportedly informing the Australian rookie that he will be replaced by Franco Colapinto for the upcoming Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola.
According to sources, the decision was communicated to Doohan on Sunday evening following the Miami Grand Prix. While Doohan outqualified teammate Pierre Gasly in Miami, his race ended in retirement after a first-corner incident with Liam Lawson. This result capped a challenging opening six races for the 21-year-old, who has yet to score a point in his debut F1 season.
Despite being promoted to a race seat for 2025 and slotted into Esteban Ocon’s car for the 2024 season finale and beyond, doubts about Doohan’s long-term future within the team reportedly emerged early on. Alpine executive advisor Flavio Briatore was reportedly exploring alternative options, including Williams reserve driver Franco Colapinto, even before Doohan’s first race. Colapinto’s signing to the Alpine Academy in January further fueled speculation.
While Doohan has shown flashes of speed, a series of mistakes and inconsistent performances have reportedly led to this decision. The underperformance of the Alpine car has also contributed to his struggles. Compared to teammate Gasly, Doohan has often lacked consistency and the ability to capitalize on opportunities.
According to a report from The Race, Doohan is expected to remain with Alpine as a reserve driver alongside Paul Aron. His reported demotion highlights the demanding and unforgiving nature of modern Formula 1, where results are paramount and underperformance can lead to swift changes.
Formula 1’s intensely competitive environment offers limited room for error, especially for rookie drivers. Teams are under constant pressure to perform, and tough decisions are often made in pursuit of short-term gains and long-term security. Colapinto’s anticipated debut at Imola represents Alpine’s hope for a fresh start and improved performance following a disappointing beginning to the season. For Doohan, this setback serves as a stark reminder of the high stakes involved and the uncertainty surrounding second chances in the sport.
