Bangkok F1 race expected in 2028
Thailand is gearing up for one of the most ambitious motorsport projects in its history.
F1 street race right in the heart of Bangkok, Thai government has officially approved plans to host the first F1 race in 2028.
Although the contract with the FIA and F1 management is still pending final signatures, the groundwork is already being laid for what could become Southeast Asia’s newest racing spectacle.
The proposed 5.7-km track will weave through the Chatuchak district, one of Bangkok’s most vibrant and accessible areas.
Early drafts of the layout include sections around the Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, the Chatuchak Weekend Market, and nearby public parks.
It offers a stunning mix of urban and scenic backdrops, the area’s excellent public transport links also make it a logical choice for both local fans and international visitors.
The total investment over the five-year span is expected to exceed $1.23 billion usd, with about $270 million dedicated to transforming everyday city roads.
If completed, this would mark Thai’s first-ever appearance on the F1 calendar, and potentially the most expensive sports project the nation has ever undertaken.

Government officials led by Shinawatra, have been closely involved in discussions with Stefano Domenicali, the CEO of F1.
The motivation is clear, Thailand sees F1 as more than just a race, it’s a chance to place Bangkok on the global stage, draw in tourism worth an estimated $440 million annually.
But the road to the green light won’t be without challenges, streets in the proposed area will need major changes and safety modifications to meet F1’s standards.
Organizers also face the logistical puzzle of minimizing traffic disruption in one of Asia’s busiest capitals, all while ensuring the city can handle tens of thousands of fans, staff and media.
Still, optimism runs high, local excitement has been boosted by F1 driver Alex Albon, whose presence in F1 has already inspired a new generation of motorsport fans across the country.
Many see his involvement as symbolic, a bridge between Thailand’s growing racing culture and the sport’s elite global stage.
