Is there anything more heartbreaking than losing the title in the very last race?
Years of hard work, giving your all, it can vanish in a single moment.
Here are some of the most dramatic final-race heartbreaks in F1 history.
1964: Graham Hill
Graham Hill had a strong season, but the Mexican GP decided everything, and things did not go well for him. John Surtees finished just ahead and took the championship, one race changed the whole year, showing how F1 can be unpredictable!
He clenched his fists in the cockpit, knowing a season of hard work had slipped away by mere seconds.
1976: Niki Lauda and James Hunt
We know what Lauda had survived in 1976 season, and he returned to race with incredible courage. At the Japanese GP, heavy rain forced him to make a tough choice, race or stay safe. He withdrew from the race in lap three, and James Hunt won the title by just one point, it was a dramatic moment that fans still talk about it today.

1983: Alain Prost
Alain Prost came close in South Africa, but turbo failure ended his hopes, again Nelson Piquet was there to take the opportunity, he claimed the title. Some doubt if Piquet was lucky to win his second in the final race of the season, but you have to be there, always, fighting.

Now, again Prost lost the 1984 championship in the last race of the season, this time, Niki Lauda won by only half a point, the closest margin ever. The Monaco GP had been stopped early due to rain, halving the points, small details like this can decide a season!
