Gianpiero Lambiase, affectionately known as “GP,” has been a cornerstone of Red Bull Racing’s success, particularly in his role as Max Verstappen’s race engineer.
His journey from the pit wall to a leadership position exemplifies dedication and expertise in the high-octane world of Formula 1.
Early Career and Rise Through the Ranks
Lambiase began his Formula 1 career in 2005 with Jordan Grand Prix, remaining with the team through its transitions to Midland, Spyker, and Force India.
During his tenure, he worked with notable drivers like Giancarlo Fisichella, Vitantonio Liuzzi, Paul di Resta, and Sergio Pérez, honing his skills in race engineering and team dynamics.
In 2015, Lambiase joined Red Bull Racing as the race engineer for Daniil Kvyat.
When Max Verstappen replaced Kvyat in 2016, Lambiase continued in his role, forging a partnership that would become instrumental in Red Bull’s championship pursuits.
Promotion to Head of Race Engineering
In 2022, Lambiase was promoted to Head of Race Engineering at Red Bull, succeeding Guillaume Rocquelin.
This role expanded his responsibilities, overseeing the race engineering department while maintaining his direct communication with Verstappen.
Ascension to Head of Racing
In 2024, Red Bull announced a significant restructuring following the departure of Sporting Director Jonathan Wheatley.
Lambiase was appointed as the Head of Racing, a role that encompasses overseeing all trackside activities, including race operations, heritage programs, car build teams, and the strategy group. He reports directly to Technical Director Pierre Wache.
Despite his expanded duties, Lambiase continues as Verstappen’s race engineer, maintaining the synergy that has been pivotal to the team’s success.
This dual role underscores his versatility and the trust placed in him by Red Bull’s leadership.
The Voice Behind the Champion
Lambiase’s communication style direct, precise, and composed has been a defining element of his relationship with Verstappen.
Their radio exchanges, often candid and strategic, have become a hallmark of Red Bull’s race broadcasts. This rapport has been credited with enhancing Verstappen’s performance and decision-making during races.
