When the NIssan GT-R R34 was launched in 1999, it immediately became a benchmark for Japanese performance cars, and it is still very popular, but very rare and hard to find one.
It was nicknamed ‘Godzilla’ for its ferocious performance, it combined race-inspired engineering with a street legal chassis, creating a driving experience few cars could match.
Under the Hood: Performance and Technology
At the heart of the R34 lies the RB26DETT 2.6-liter twin-turbo inline-six engine.
Officially rated at 280PS due to Japan’s ‘Gentleman’s Agreement’ – the engine often exceeded these numbers in reality, delivering smooth yet exhilarating power.
Coupled with a 6-speed Getrag manual transmission and the ATTESA E-TS all-wheel-drive system.
So what made it very popular, it was very fast back in the day if you look back in the day, Nissan made something that nobody ever did before, it could accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.6 seconds.
However, the car’s suspensions was finely tuned for precision, balancing stiffness and comfort.
Steering felt direct and the near-perfect weight distribution, made the R34 remarkably agile.
Inside the cockpit was driver focused, featuring multifunction displays showing boost, oil temp, and lap times, giving enthusiasts both performance and control.
