The incredible 1997 Monaco Grand Prix went down in history as an iconic event of the Formula 1 races. The competition did not fail to incur a lot of mixed weather, crash drama and most importantly superb capability of Michael Schumacher in driving.
A Wet Causal Factor:
The race commenced in the rain, and so the drivers required to change strategies and make the right tire selection. The two Williams drivers, Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve went for slicks expecting that the weather would improve. Instead, the rains did not let up and most notably Michael Schumacher who was on the second row of the grid had intermediate tires on which was clearly a better decision.
Early retirements:
The race itself featured a great number of unfortunate high profile retirements. Both McLaren drivers, Mika Häkkinen and David Coulthard, were both involved in retirement accidents together with Damon Hill and even Pedro Diniz. Such retirements created a sense of jeopardy and excitement to the race.
Schumacher’s Dominance:
Through the hard conditions presented, Michael Schumacher managed to take the lead in the race almost immediately. Managing to stay quite a safe distance in front all the way and displaying great skills and mastery of the very challenging Monaco course, he went on to win the race.
Ferrari’s Victory:
The win became a major event for Ferrari as it was their first victory in the prestiged Monaco Grand Prix since 1981. This win also more cemented Ferrari as one of the top teams in Formula One.
Flag Wrangle:
There was also a slight commotion after the wrong flag was used to present Eddie Irvine on a podium. Instead of the Union Jack, the Irish flag managed to make it to the podium due to issues concerning Irvine’s Superlicence.
Larini’s Last Race:
Last but not least, the 1997 Monaco Grand Prix turned out to be the last race in a Formula 1 career for Nicola Larini who represented Moldova Sauber team.
In Closing:
The 1997 Monaco Grand Prix was entertaining and boisterous filled with action and tension especially with the winning ways of Michael Schumacher. Though weather conditions and retirements from many racers affected the race, it still offered great entertainment to the fans of Formula 1.
