We continue our journey of bringing you stories from the past. Our latest stories have focused on forgotten F1 projects that never reached the grid, and our next “what if” story takes us to the Alpine A500, an F1 prototype that played an important role in the future of the sport, especially for Renault.
It never appeared on an official F1 race, never fought for points and never entered as a proper race car. Alpine A500 was essentially the first step towards the Renault RS01, the car that would bring turbocharging to F1 in 1977.
Alpine A500: A Secret Project Built for F1
The A500 was very much connected to F1, even though it never officially raced there, at the time, F1 regulations allowed manufacturers to use either a naturally aspirated 3.0-liter engine or a smaller 1.5-liter engine equiped with forced induction, the French team saw the opportunity in those rules and decided to explore turbocharging, a tech that was still largely unproved in F1.
The project was developed through the close connection between Alpine, Renault and Gordini.
Andre de Cortanze was involved in creating the chassis, while Gordini developed the compact 1.5-liter turbocharged V6 engine, rather than immediately building a complete F1 challenger and entering F1, Renault used the A500 as an experimental machine, the purpose was simple, although the challenge was anything but, understand how a turbocharged engine would behave in a F1-style car.
The prototype was reportedly kept deliberately discreet during its development and testing, painted in a dark, plain appearance and without the kind of branding expected from a racing team, the car looked like a secret engineering project than a future F1 car, that was exactly what it was.
Why Was the Alpine A500 Called a Laboratory Car?
The Alpine A500 wasn’t created with the intention of winning races, it was built to answer questions that Renault engineers couldn’t fully answer on paper or on an engine test bench.
How would a turbocharged V6 respond under racing conditions? Could the engine survive long periods of full throttle? How much heat would the turbocharger produce? Could a driver control the sudden arrival of turbocharged power? These were some of the problems the A500 was designed to explore.
In many ways, the car was a rolling laboratory car, spending enormous resources developing a finished F1 car before understanding the new tech, Renault and Alpine first created a prototype that could be tested, modified and pushed to its limits.
The A500 gave the engineers the opportunity to discover its weaknesses before Renault made its official commitment to F1, Jean-Pierre Jabouille became an important part of the process, as the driver responsible for testing the car, he helped provide the feedback needed.
The A500 was tested at circuits including Dijon and Jarama, meaning it wasn’t simply an engine experiment hidden inside a workshop, it was taken to proper racing tracks and developed in conditions that were much closer to what Renault would face in F1.
The 1.5-Liter Turbocharged V6
The engine was developed by Gordini, compared with the 3.0-liter naturally aspirated engines used by most F1 teams, Renault’s approach was radically different, the smaller engine relied on turbocharging to produce competitive levels of power.
Early versions of the engine were capable of producing around 500 horsepower, an impressive figure for a 1.5-liter unit in the mid-1970s, but finding horsepower was only one part of the challenge, the engineers also had to deal with reliability, heat and throttle response.
Turbocharging wasn’t yet a polished technology for F1, the delay between pressing the accelerator and receiving the full power, known as turbo lag, could make the car difficult to predicts, the engine and turbocharger also generated enormous amounts of heat, that was another major problem, so A500 allowed Renault to discover these problems before entering the grid.

Why the Alpine A500 Never Raced
The Alpine A500 never raced in F1, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the project failed, the car was primarily designed as a development prototype rather than a finished racing car, it was created to test the turbo engine and collect information that could later be used for Renault’s proper F1 programme, and A500 wasn’t competitive enough to enter the grid.
According to other sources, the experimental turbo system still suffered from serious problems, heat management was difficult, throttle response was far from ideal and reliability remained a major concern.
A car designed for testing could tolerate frequent modifications and mechanical issues, but a F1 race car needed to survive an entire weekend while remaining competitive, A500 simply represented an earlier stage of development.
Renault continued its work behind the scenes, the lessons learned during the A500 programme were then carried into a completely new car, that decision eventually produced the Renault RS01.

From Alpine A500 to Renault RS01

The A500 may have carried the Alpine name, but its development was directly connected to Renault’s future F1 entry, after the testing programme provided valuable experience with the turbocharged V6, Renault moved forward with a dedicated F1 car, the result was the Renault RS01, which made its F1 debut at the 1977 British Grand Prix.
The RS01 became the first F1 car to race with a turbocharged engine during the modern turbo era, its early appearance were difficult, reliability problems were common, and the unusual turbocharged engine made the project an easy target for criticism.
The Renault RS01 would eventually earn the famous nickname, the Yellow Teapot, because of the smoke that sometimes appeared when the car retired, but the idea that began with the Alpine A500 was slowly starting to prove itself.
Only a few years later, Renault’s turbocharged technology would no longer look like a risky experiment, other manufacturers and teams began developing their own turbo engines, and F1 entered an era in which turbocharged cars would eventually dominate the sport.
However, Renault became the first team to win an F1 race with a turbocharged engine. In the years that followed, other manufacturers also developed powerful turbocharged engines, with BMW producing one that reportedly reached around 1,400 horsepower in qualifying trim.
Let us not forget that Ferrari later experimented with Comprex technology in an attempt to solve turbo lag. Ferrari believed the system could provide a major advantage and help make them the team to beat, but the experiment failed during the very first race in which the car was used.
A Forgotten but Important Part of F1 History
The Alpine A500 never stood on a F1 starting grid, it never scored a point, finished a race or fought for a championship.
Yet its importance comes from what happened after its testing programme ended, the car helped Renault understand the possibilities and limitations of turbocharging in a F1 environment, it gave Jean-Piere Jabouille and the engineers valuable experience, while also helping shape the development of the Renault RS01.
In that sense, the A500 wasn’t simply an Alpine prototype that failed to become a F1 car, it was an important step in the creation of Renault’s F1 programme and the beginning of the turbo revolution.
The car never raced, because racing wasn’t really its main job, its job was to experiment, to break, to reveal weaknesses and to provide answers, once these answers had been collected, the Alpine A500 could disappear from the spotlight while its ideas moved forward into the Renault RS01. Simply Alpine A500 left behind a surprisingly important legacy, it remains one of F1’s greatest forgotten development cars and a fascinating reminder that sometimes the most influental projects aren’t the ones that actually get to race.
