The infamous Wall of Champions at the Canadian GP has become one of F1’s most feared corners.
Here; we explore the F1 legends who crashed into the Wall of Champions, how it earned its famous name, and the notable drivers who crashed there.
At the exit of the final chicane at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve sits one of the most infamous pieces of contrete in motorsport history.
Drivers enter the tight left-right chicane under heavy braking before trying to carry as much speed as possible onto the main straight. Finding the perfect balance on the exit is incredibly difficult, even for world champions. One tiny mistake is enough to destroy an entire race weekend, especially under pressure from a rival close behind. To defend your position properly, drivers must get a clean exit through the final chicane, often pushing the car right to the edge beside the wall.
However, that barrier became known worldwide as the “Wall of Champions,”; a name created after one unforgettable afternoon at the Canadian GP in 1999.
Why It Was Called the “F1 Wall of Champions”
1999 Canadian GP: after three F1 champions crashed into exactly the same wall during the race.
Fans and commentators could hardly believe what they were seeing; three champions eliminated by one corner in a single race instantly created F1 mythology.
Ironically; the wall at the time carried a ‘Bienvenue Au Quebec’ sign painted across it, welcoming drivers to Quebec moments before ending their race.
Damon Hill – 1996 Formula 1 World Champion

He was the first champion to fall victim during the famous 1999 race.
Hill lost control exiting the final chicane on lap 14 and slammed directly into the barrier.
At first, it looked like a normal Montreal accident, but nobody realized the wall was about to claim even bigger names.
Damon Hill’s crash started the chain reaction that would give the barrier its legendary status forever!
Michael Schumacher – Seven-Time Formula 1 World Champion

Michael Schumacher’s crash remains one of the most shocking Wall of Champions moments because he was leading the race comfortably at the time.
The German clipped the outside wall while accelerating onto the straight; instantly ending what looked like a certain victory.
That corner; once again showed how it can punish even the greatest drivers in Formula 1 history.
Michael attacked the chicane aggressively to maximize speed down the straight; but one small error was enough to destroy the race.
Jacques Villeneuve – 1997 Formula 1 World Champion

For the Canadian fans; Villeneuve’s crash made the day even more dramatic.
The home favorite hit the wall on lap 34 of the 1999 race; becoming the third champion to crash there in the same afternoon.
It was that moment, officially cemented the barrier’s legendary nickname.
What makes Villeneuve’s story even stranger is that he had already crashed at the same corner back in 1997, before the wall became famous.
Long before it was called the Wall of Champions, the danger was already there!
Jenson Button – 2009 Formula 1 World Champion

Jenson Button joined the list during the 2005 Canadian GP while fighting near the front of the field.
He clipped the wall exiting the chicane and damaged his car heavily enough to end his race.
By that stage, the barrier already had a terrifying reputation, and his accident simply added another future champion’s name to the growing list, years before he won the title in 2009.

Sebastian Vettel – Four-Time Formula 1 World Champion

Even dominant champions were not immune.
During Friday practice at the Canadian GP in 2011, Vettel lost control and smashed into the wall while preparing for qualifying.
Although it happened in practice rather than the race; it reminded everyone how little margin exists at Montreal.
Drivers spend the entire weekend pushing closer and closer to the barrier because the final corner is critical for lap time.

Other Notable Drivers Who Crashed There
The wall has claimed far more than world champions over the decades….
Ricardo Zonta was actually the first driver to crash there during the infamous 1999 weekend; moments before the champions began hitting it themselves.
Others like, Ralf Schumacher, Rubens Barrichello, Nick Heidfeld, Juan Pablo Montoya, Pastor Maldonado, Bruno Senna, Kamui Kobayashi, have all suffered accidents at the same unforgiving exit.
Long before the nickname even existed, Derek Warwick crashed there in 1988, proving that the corner had always been dangerous.
Let’s not forget Max Verstappen the four time world champion, he never suffered a full race-ending crash there, he only brushed the wall of champions during qualifying in 2024, and fortunately for him, the contact wasn’t enough to end his session.
Why the Wall Is So Difficult
The danger comes from the design of the final chicane itself; drivers attack the kerbs because they need maximum speed onto the start finish straight.
The car becomes unstable over the bumps, especially if the driver cuts the chicane too hard, once the rear steps out slightly, the wall arrives almost instantly.
The wall sits incredibly close to the racing line, heavily virtually no room for correction. Now modern F1 cars are also much wider than older generations, that’s why drivers often brush the wall lightly during qualifying laps, they know the risk is enormous, but the reward in lap time is too valuable to ignore.
Was the Wall of Champions Redesigned?
Yes, although it was never fundamentally removed or softened completely; ahead of the 2017 F1 season, the organizers modified the angle of the wall because the new generation of F1 cars had become significantly faster and wider.
The original wall angle created harsher impacts; engineers slightly re-aligned the barrier so crashes would become more glancing rather than direct head-on collision.
Tecpro safety barriers were also added nearby to absorb energy more effectively during accidents.
Years earlier, the chicane kerbs had also been raised, making the cars bounce more aggressively if drivers cut the corner too much; that sometimes launched cars directly toward the wall itself.

A Wall That Became F1 History
Most barriers in F1 are forgotten, but the Wall of Champions became something much bigger.
It punished champions; reminded everyone that even the greatest drivers in motorsport can make tiny mistakes under pressure.
That’s why fans still talk about it decades later; at Montreal, drivers are not only racing each other, they are racing the wall waiting at the exit of the final corner.
